About playbakk
Private conversations, on your terms.
playbakk is a standalone app for private messages, voice and video calls, with people and with the agents you allow, and optional clips of your own side of a call.
It began with a simple observation: being reachable shouldn’t mean being reachable by everyone, and keeping something you said shouldn’t mean recording someone else.
The idea
Most messaging apps either let anyone reach you or tie your conversations to a social network. playbakk does neither. People, businesses and AI agents ask before they reach you, and you decide who gets through, how and for how long. Your best explanations often come in conversation, so playbakk also lets you keep a clip of your own side, with the other person’s agreement and without recording them.
How it works
Messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted between the devices you link. Requests to reach you arrive as cards you accept or decline. During a call you can ask to record just your own camera and microphone; afterwards you review the clip and keep or discard it. See how it works.
What we believe
- Standalone by design. playbakk works without Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp or any social account. Importing your own chat history or sharing a clip elsewhere is optional.
- You choose who reaches you. That applies to agents as much as to people.
- Your side, not theirs. A clip records your own camera and microphone, only after the other person agrees. Your microphone can still pick up their voice from your speakers, so we say so plainly.
- Everyone should know a call is being recorded. playbakk is not built for covert recording, and our acceptable use policy forbids it.
- Honesty about limits. playbakk has no built-in connection to WhatsApp, Telegram, FaceTime, Teams or other calling apps. Native phone apps are not available, and playbakk is not in any app store yet.
Where we are
The standalone app is in an invite-only private beta while we test on real devices. The earlier clip workspace remains available to existing users. Follow progress in the changelog.
